The main purposes of a Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) system are to help maintain good indoor air quality through adequate ventilation with filtration and provide thermal comfort. Proper air filtration and care for your HVAC system will result in better conditions and air quality for occupants of the building as well as increase the efficiency and longevity of the HVAC system.
HVAC Air Filter Efficiency Ratings
Placement of air filters within a buildings ventilation system can block airborne particulates that can include, animal dander, pollen, mold spores, bacteria and viruses depending on the Minimum Efficiency Rating Value (MERV) of your air filters. For an HVAC system it is recommended that you use air filters with MERV Rating between 8 and 13. The higher the rating, the more contaminants that will be blocked and therefore will result in better protection of the equipment and building occupants.
